Railroad Switch Broom — FRP Handle, Integrated Ice Pick, Optional 90 lb Magnetic Mount

The Railhead RH-SWBROOM Series is purpose-built for clearing ice, snow, and debris from railroad switch points. Unlike traditional wooden switch brooms, the fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) handle does not absorb water, helping prevent the freeze-and-split failures common during winter service. A high-visibility finish makes the broom easier to locate in snow and ballast, while the integrated corrosion-resistant cast-iron ice pick helps crews break up stubborn ice around switch components.

Two configurations are available: the standard RH-SWBROOM and the RH-SWBROOM-M, which adds a high-strength, 90 lb pull ceramic permanent magnet for storing the broom directly on a ferrous locomotive surface.

Traditional switch brooms are often placed in locomotive steps or ladder areas when not in use, creating the potential to obstruct required handholds, steps, and other safety appliances. The RH-SWBROOM-M provides a dedicated magnetic storage alternative that keeps the broom out of these areas without requiring modification to the locomotive. By helping crews maintain clear access to required safety appliances, the magnetic configuration supports safer onboard storage practices and helps reduce the risk of violations associated with obstructed locomotive steps under 49 CFR Part 231.
